Humanitarian Foundation BUDI HUMAN - Aleksandar Šapić
raises funds for Nikola Stakić (2016).
After his birth, Nikola was transferred to the Institute for Neonatology due to suspicion caused by heart failure, which was later confirmed with the help of a karyotype, that he had Down syndrome.
The operation of the VSD (Ventricular septal defect) was carried out at University Children’s Hospital Tirsov in his sixth month. A few days later, it was found out that a cracks appeared where the VSD was operated and that there was a higher pulmonary hypertension, which caused for Nikola to have frequent respiratory infections. However, this did not bother him very much, so he advanced, grew, developed, spoke reasonably in accordance with his age, sat, walked, and was a hyperactive, happy child.
In March 2018, he was settled in the Department of Cardiology, where it was found out, that after the seventh pneumonia, occurring one after another, he got a pulmonary edema. That demanded catheterization as soon as it was possible. The doctor's opinion was that he was safe, that he was better and he was waiting to recover. However on April 10, Nikola suffered a heart failure in his mother's arms and all his organs stopped working.
Reanimation lasted about fifteen minutes which resulted in brain damage. Soon after he began to get frequent and strong epileptic seizures. He was in a coma for a month. When he woke up his parents were informed that his brain had been damaged and that his life would be like a life of a plant. In addition to all the problems, lack of oxygen in the brain also caused Hydrocephalus so VP shunt had to be installed, so as the tracheostomies through which he breathes and gastrostomy - the peg through which he is fed.
So far, Nikola has been on the verge of life and death three times. He is fighting and trying hard for his life. He began to see, to follow objects with his eyes, react to the sound, express emotions by crying or laughing. When one of the medical staff comes to him, he sees that he is in fear and spasm. He almost started to relax and move his hands. But he still has spasms in his legs so he needs physical therapy.
Nikola's situation improved a lot, compared to how it was at the beginning, giving the family hope that he will recover with adequate therapy. It is necessary for Nikola to have stem cells treatment abroad for which his parents have no financial resources. He also needs money for therapies and appliances that keep him alive.
Let’s allow Nikola to come home to his sister who eagerly waits for him after more than five months. Necessary devices that he needs are: respirator, aspirator, pulse oximeter, ambu bag, oxygen bottles. He also needs financial support for further medical treatment because his family had many expenditures in the past months.
