Katarina was born as a healthy baby with a grade of 9/10. She was hospitalized when she was two months old due to malnutrition because she refused food. The pediatrician said that Katarina had hypotonia, dystonia and was not able to hold her head.

However, later she managed to hold her head and develop normally until the sixth month. Since then, almost invisibly, the symptoms of the disease began to manifest - she could not stand on her feet, and around tenth month, the general condition had deteriorated rapidly. She ceased to rotate aside, she was no longer capable to lift her legs and was forced to be in a lying position only.

Physical therapies did not give positive results and Katarina was getting weaker and weaker.  The family found out at the Neurology Clinic in Belgrade, that it was not a hypotonia, but a genetic analysis confirmed the suspicion that Katarina suffered from spinal muscular atrophy, type 2.

SMA is a neuromuscular disease characterized by a progressive loss of basic life functions such as walking, digestion, swallowing and breathing. Katarina is on the waiting list for Spinraza medication, but besides that, she needs one device that keeps her alive and that is cough assist equipment, because she does not have the strength to cough out secretion from her lungs. In addition to that device, she also needs medications and physical therapies.
